WhatsApp Phone Scam
The WhatsApp scam has migrated from the UK and Europe to the US in force. A message arrives from an unknown US number — "Hi Mom/Dad, I broke my phone, this is my new number" — followed by an urgent request for money.
Warning signs
- Unsolicited WhatsApp message claiming to be from a child, parent, sibling.
- Refusal or excuse when asked to call or video chat.
- Immediate request for money — usually for a "missed bill" or "deposit gone wrong".
- Insistence on Zelle, Venmo, Cash App, or wire transfer.
Real-world scripts
- "Hi Mom, this is my new number. My phone got water damaged. Can you Zelle me $850 for a new one? I'll pay you back Friday."
If you receive this call
- Verify by calling the family member on the number you already have.
- Insist on a video call. Scammers will refuse — real family will not.
- Report and block on WhatsApp, then file at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
