Amazon Phone Scam
The Amazon scam is among the most-reported phone frauds in the US. The caller claims your Prime membership has been auto-renewed for $499 or similar, and offers a "refund" — which conveniently requires your card details or remote access to your computer.
Warning signs
- Robocall mentioning "Amazon" and a specific dollar charge.
- Press-1 to "cancel the charge".
- Transfer to a "specialist" who asks you to install AnyDesk, TeamViewer, or another remote-access tool.
- Requests to log into your bank to confirm the refund landed.
Real-world scripts
- "Your Amazon Prime membership has been renewed for $499.99. Press 1 to dispute this charge."
- "We need to issue a refund — please log in to your bank and we'll process it together."
If you receive this call
- Hang up. Amazon will never call you to discuss charges.
- Check your actual orders only at amazon.com — never via the caller.
- Never install remote-access software at someone's instruction over the phone.
- Report at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
